SOLE PROPRIETORSHIP
Start a business in your own name.
Identify the registrations your business needs, with a written scope and quote before you proceed.
Which registrations does a sole proprietor need?
A sole proprietorship is a business owned by one individual. The owner and business are not separate legal persons. There is no single MCA incorporation certificate for a proprietorship; the registrations needed depend on its activities, location and applicable rules.
Start with the business activity
- Check GST registration against turnover, supply type, state and applicable compulsory-registration rules. It is not required for every business simply because it is a proprietorship.
- Check Udyam eligibility if the business qualifies as an MSME. Government Udyam registration is free; assistance fees are separate.
- Food businesses need the applicable FSSAI registration or licence. Local trade and Shops and Establishments requirements should also be checked.
- Banks require evidence of the business and proprietor for a current account. Requirements vary by bank.
Documents and pricing
- Prepare the proprietor’s PAN, identity and address evidence, business address documents and activity details. Additional evidence depends on the application.
- Tell us what you sell, where you operate and your expected turnover. We will identify the relevant registrations and give a written scope and price before you proceed.
- Compare an OPC if you want a company with one shareholder. A proprietorship does not provide the same separation of personal and business liability.
